AR Orb Weavers


Working list of true Orb Weavers in Arkansas. List compiled originally from the Peggy Dorris survey list. Note that some of her original species have been moved to the Tetragnathidae in the rearrangement in the past twenty years. And then in the new 2005 Spiders of North America manual some of these have been moved back. And many of her genera have changed. I have tried to use the updated classifications. Some species added from internet sources. The state occurrences are from internet sources mostly as well. Range lists which do not include AR are species that appeared on the Dorris list despite the available internet ranges. Spiders listed in more states than about twenty are listed as EXTENSIVE. I have no ranges for a few of the species below. Araneus carroll is listed only for Arkansas and it did not appear on the Dorris survey but I am told by Dr. Jeff Barnes at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville that the only known specimen is from Carroll County, Arkansas. Common names have not been formalized and many have none.

 

Note that many of these are unphotographed in the wild. This is because they can be extremely difficult to tell apart. Female genitalia are often the separation factor for the spider guys in the lab. But by then they are not pretty photographic subjects. Certainly some are very distinctive. And many are very common at the right time of year in their habitat.
