Eastern Bombyliidae |
Working list of the Bombylid flies likely in the eastern United States. These flies, like many groups, are highly concentrated in the west and so the possibilities in the east are significantly narrower. I have listed currently below 136 species. This was a difficult list obtained from the online World Catalog, from Frank Hull's 1973 Bee Flies of the World and from the Neartica site list. Several major changes in the classification have occurred in the Bombylids in the last 20 years and the Neartica site is not up to date for some of these changes though it does list new species not available in the Hull publication. The most significant change is that the large genus Mythicomyia and some related genera have been split off into their own family and are no longer regarded as bee flies in the Bombylid sense anyway. They were tiny and difficult flies (still are). Also several genera have shifted to new subfamilies. The taxonomic order and subfamily splits are from the World Catalog updated in 2003. My key in progress to the eastern genera is here.
Otherwise as you can see below there are several subfamily divisions that have very few species in the east. Making it easier for these species at least. Only eastern state occurrences are listed. Links are as available. Ranges are only for the eastern states and are as listed in the world catalog. EXT is used where more than about ten or twelve scattered states in the east are listed. The species included at the excellent Canadian Bombylid site are marked with an asterisk. These have images of specimens there. Live shots are linked where possible but image links were made for the Canadian spec shots where none others exist.
