From Skimmers to Meadowhawks to Gliders to Pennants, the Libellulids are a large and diverse group. Some are extremely common and dominant species. Others localized and unusual. Most of our commonest dragonflies are in this group and at times they can be overwhelmingly abundant in a given wet habitat. If most people can name a dragonfly it will be one of these species from a yard or open garden. It may have even landed on them. This female Whitetail ranks as one of the commonest dragons in many areas, especially in manmade habitats.
