The Darners are generally large dragons. They are strong flyers and sometimes occur in impressive collected feeding flights. Cold tolerant, many species occur north of us into Canada and Alaska. They hang vertically when perching but I have seen them horizontal when feeding on a catch. The Common Green Darner, Anax junius, is one of the ubiquitous dragons in our area. They are migratory in late summer and into fall and can be seen moving south in great flocks. Seven species occur in Arkansas. Delicate in detail, camouflaged sometimes, but often just boldly bright as though safe from everything.
