Westfall's Snaketail Ophiogomphus westfallii

Our only member of the Ophiogomphus group in the state. Distinctive for the bright green and mostly unmarked thorax. Several other species in this group are unmarked but none occur in Arkansas and many of the Ophiogomphus are very localized in specific geographic regions. This species is endemic to the Ozarks in north Arkansas and southern Missouri. This is the male.

Close up of male terminalia.

Female in hand with smaller club and lighter coloration overall. These are found near clear rocky streams and the adjacent open perching areas such as nearby fields and meadows. The above male and female are from Sharp County near the Strawberry River.
