Blue-eyed Darner Aeschna multicolor

Another true Aeschna genus member that is also a late flier. It has never been documented for AR but this shot is from across the border in OK at Red Slough. Berlin located this one in November 2008. And took some damn nice on-the-fly shots. Note the very blue face and the large spots on the abdomen typical of several of the northern Darner species. There is a similar eastern species called the Spatterdock Darner, Aeschna mutata, also not located here yet but approaches closely from the east.

Shot showing the large and bright abdominal spotting and the long cerci. The above named species are the only blue faced Darners likely to be seen in our area.
