Bar-winged Skimmer Libellula axilena

A southwestern species that is closely related to the Slaty Skimmer of the east. Note those more extended black anterior markings along the wing front which are variable. The male adult is a powdery blue like the Great Blue Skimmer but with a darker abdominal tip and a darker face. Size is close to the Slaty Skimmer only it looks bulkier to me. Slatys and Bar-wings do occur together in the Florida/Georgia area. Bar-wings have been recorded by George Harp in only one northeastern county in Arkansas. Confirmation would require capture. This is likely a juvenile female. Full adult colored females are very similar to female Slatys.
