The Shiny Cowbird is the only cowbird to show itself in Luck's yard so far. All black like the Ruby-crowned Tanager with a different beak and tail. (Compare the tanager.) Tanager has white wing linings. The biology of this bird like many cowbirds is complex and impressive. They can be damaging to certain species that have not protective mechanisms. Some bird species will remove the eggs when they are found. Some have no guards. They tend to parasitize smaller species in the warbler and sparrow groups in South America. They are especially fond of House Wrens and Rufous-collared Sparrows. Note comparison female Brazilian Tanager.

The same bird with a female Saffron Finch in the background. Saffrons nest in Luck's yard.
