Queen Danaus gilippus

Somewhat like a dark Monarch. Can be common in Florida and Texas and the southwest. I have seen but one straggler in Arkansas. Very similar to the Soldier which does not wander much further than south Texas. Like the Monarch, males seek flowers with particular chemical attractants.

The same animal from the side.

So Charles was wandering the dam looking for more Ceraunus and found the first Queen in several years for AR in 2012. Crystal clear upper shot showing once again the little dipper star alignment on the wing. This is a male with the prominent scent glands.

Charles went on to find at least three Queens in SW AR in 2012 into November. Mostly near the damsite flower areas.
