Hobomok Skipper Poanes hobomok

A secretive woodland butterfly. Found in the northern woodlands of Arkansas. One of the few with a marked sexual dimorphism. This is the male. I have never photographed the females. But the shebomok looks like a Clouded Skipper with orange markings on the interior wing surfaces. Related to the Zabulon but very different in behavior and much less common. The Zabulon female also resembles the Clouded Skipper on the exterior wings.

This male is from Conway county. Again in a wooded, creekside environment. There were several males buzzing each other for the best sunspots. Note the silvery scaling on the wing edges not seen well in the above shot.
