Eastern Pine Elfin Callophrys niphon

Very different from the other Hairstreak group. The Elfins are secretive and unpredictable. They pop out in early spring and don't stay long. This is the most common of the eastern group of species. Named for its caterpillar food plant, it sometimes occurs good distances from any Pine Trees. I've had them appear on my lawn. I'm not sure they ever open their wings except to fly. The above individual is worn. The fresh one below shows the stunning purples that can occur. And we even get a glimpse of the mythical inner wing.

Very fine shot of a fresh individual in Bo's area at Jim Cress WMA. Less purpled than mine above but really rich otherwise.
