Central American Butterflies

 

The major Nymphalid subfamilies below are complete and are fairly accurate and focused on the lowland Caribbean species such as in La Selva, Costa Rica. Most of the highland species and species that occur only above 300 meters in Costa Rica are not listed, though some were added where widespread in Central America and in Belize. Belize (BZ) butterflies marked as shown in extreme SE Mexico in Glassberg or on the web butterfly atlas. Not all of these are definitely known yet from Belize. List is less accurate as you move into central MX or south into Panama and below. See the separate info for the other butterfly families below.
